I called to get pricing to replace our catalytic converter and was told to start off it'll be $150 (to basically diagnose).... seems a bit crazy when other people don't charge to diagnose but check what needs to be serviced and then follow through with servicing what ever the issue may be.
Hi Jessica, I just tried to call you but I had to leave a voicemail 3:30 PM 09/21/2018, First, let me apologize for any misunderstanding that took place over the phone. These conversations are much better discussed in person. The $150.00 is an area to start with to verify that your car even needs a catalytic convertor and if it does find out why (when we have these conversations we do state we might use all of the testing money or we may not). Many times an engine that is running with too little fuel (such as a vacuum leak ) or an engine that may be getting too much fuel (such as from a drippy fuel injector or leaking fuel pressure regulator) can be the root cause of your catalytic convertor failing in the first place and with these parts being a substantial investment , making sure nothing is missed is the correct course of action and the professional thing to do. These things take time and that is no different than paying your doctor to run test before they fix something that may or may not be all of the problem. These type of test are not performed for no charge. Something like using a basic scanner to read a data trouble code can be done for no charge for the customer, but in most cases it will not correctly identify why your catalytic convertor has gone bad. I believe most people would agree that It would be very irresponsible for us to just "beat the lowest price", put on the new part and then let you damage or destroy your new part again, without first taking the necessary time to run the correct testing. I will keep trying to call you so we can discuss this further. Thanks for your time Craig Craig's Car Care
