Safe Tailgating Tips

Safe Tailgating Tips

Whether you are at the tailgate to enjoy some grilled food or cold drinks, your safety matters, you don't want to get food poisoning or run into a rowdy crowd. Here are safe tailgating tips you shouldn't ignore.

1. Observe grill safety

Having loose gas hoses or improper lighting may cause your team or other tailgate goers' problems. For example, lighting gas with the top lid closed could result in an explosion. If you're grilling, ensure you carry a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit to your grilling area. You never know when a knife will cut you or when your friend may get a burn.

Additionally, grill outside in a well-ventilated area to avoid fire accidents. If you are using coals, douse water on the coals and let them cool before you discard or pack them.

2. Don't overdrink alcohol

Tailgating and drinking go hand in hand, but make sure you drink responsibly. Overdrinking may cause rowdiness leading to dangerous situations like fights or arguments. So, instead of taking too much alcohol, opt for other nonalcoholic drinks like water or juices.

3. Choose a designated driver

If you are going to have too much alcohol, choose one member of your group to take up the driving duty. Driving under alcohol influence may impair your vision, leading to an accident. Having a designated driver may help you avoid accidents and save your life. If no one from your group is sober, you may decide to order an Uber. It is better to share uber costs than pay for DUI.

4. Practice food safety

Nothing ruins a great tailgate like food poisoning. Keeping your food at a safe temperature will help destroy harmful bacteria that may cause food poisoning. If you are bringing raw or uncooked food, put plenty of ice in your cooler. It's also a good idea to wash your hands before and after handling raw meat. When taking food off the grill, use a clean platter to avoid contamination.
