My check engine light was on, dealer quoted me to fix the problem for $2,650. They were unable to give me a quote without letting them to do a diagnosis, the result was same - timing chain and the tensioner. They advised me to do a oil change to see if it fixes the problem. It doesn’t work. They quoted me to change out timing chain, water pump etc and the cost is atleast 4,000 plus. I think the oil change was a waste, anyway they tried, I got to say they did a thorough job for the inspection of the car with pictures for $200 plus, but i am not going to spend more than $4,000 if they aren’t sure the problem
Good Morning Vincent, I am responding to your review here and will try and call you again to discuss this. Had you told us you went to the dealer for a first opinion we could have approached this differently as far a s the testing went. You had said you went to a parts store and they said they thought it was a timing chain. The training of a dealer diagnostic tech and the training of a parts store tech are vastly different jobs and training when it comes to diagnostics testing services. We were very open an honest with you for the steps to cover first before suggesting such a major repair like a timing chain that cannot be easily seen without substantial engine disassembly. With the oil change sticker on your windshield indicating the last oil and filter service was done 06/08/2017 at 107956 and todays date of 02/19/2019 with a mileage of 129442 or 21,486 miles overdue for service and the oil in your engine was well over a quart low, replacing the oil and filter made perfect sense since the variable cam timing codes are directly affected by oil pressure and clean oil that will not sludge up and clogged up the small screens in the variable cam timing solenoids that effect the same codes your car has. When we were quoting the price I heard Matt say that $4000.00 was worst case scenario to change not just the timing chain and tensioner but all 3 timing chains and tensioners seals, water pump and any other moving parts that were in this location while the engine was apart for no additional labor, this makes sense for an engine with well over 100,000 miles on it ,and it could come down from there. In the past 23 years I have owned Craig's Car Care and the additional 10 years I had in the industry before I owned my own shop, I had found customers always preferred to know the worst-case price and are always grateful and happy when the final repair bill is less than quoted. I am sorry we were not able to completely satisfy you as this is our goal. I do wish just filling the oil back up to the correct level and having that clean oil and a new filter would have fixed the problem. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and I will try to reach out to you today. Our job is to provide the customer with the complete picture and all the information the car tells us it needs and the factory recommended service due, then present the customer with all the information. The choice is 100% up to the customer if they wish to invest money into their vehicle. Craig
